Introduction to Systemic Histology
send questions or comments to Laura P. Hale, MD. PhD. at hale0004@mc.duke.edu
The purpose of this course is to teach students how to identify various cell types in standard histologic sections and to identify a variety of normal tissues. This course will be useful to any student whose research requires examination of tissue sections. Structure/function relationships will be emphasized, using an organ system approach. The scheduled class time will include lecture and demonstration of various tissue slides by the instrutor. Beginning in 2005, the course will be taught primarily using "virtual microscopy", supplemented by examination of glass slides using a conventioanl optical microscope. In virtual microscopy, glass slides scanned at high resolution are viewed on a computer monitor. Students have the ability to select regions of intrest for higher magnification viewing and in many cases, can also change the focus. Unless arrangements are made in advance, students are expected to bring their own laptop computer to class for each class period.
